Cancer Detection
Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin
cancer, and can spread throughout the body if undetected and
untreated. It occurs as a result of the pigment forming cells
in the skin, and is usually associated with too much sun exposure.
Forunately, melanoma is easy to treat if it is detected
early. Keeping your skin protected from the sun and having
it checked regularly are the best forms of protection against
melanomas. |

At Ellenbrook Medical Centre we have a SolarScan
monitoring system, developed in Australia by Polartechnics
Ltd , to help us detect even minute changes in a mole.
The system takes high resolution digital images of the skin,
quickly, safely and painlessly. It then stores the images
and compares them to images from previous visits to determine
if there have been any changes to the mole. |

As with any kind of cancer, early detection
is essential. Everyone has at least a couple of moles that
they 'keep an eye on'. But can you really tell if that spot
has changed from one checkup to the next? With SolarScan,
you can, and that information may one day help to save your
life. The question is, can you afford not to have regular
skin checkups? |

What
to look for
Malignant moles often exhibit the following characteristics
so keep an eye out:
Changes in size
Changes in shape
Changes in colour or pattern
Bleeding or itching |
